Half term is upon us and thousands of delighted children have taken to our parks, cinemas, shops and streets. Everywhere is packed to the rafters! It’s a short but sweet school holiday peppered with halloween preparations and weather-permitting excursions which, more often than not, result in mud getting somewhere it shouldn't... I love how children live in the moment, soaking up the autumn rays, revelling in frosty breath and fireworks. If only mums and dads could do the same! You see, since becoming a parent I have realised that half term isn't just a little jolly to break up the season. ..

  Buying children presents is never an easy task. Their fads and fancies change like the wind and what you thought was a dead cert often turns into a dead end…Months of Minions are suddenly forgotten for the new craze on the block and on it goes. Woe betide the chancer who gifts the wrong superhero without doing their research first.   But there is one thing that ALL children love and that is something, anything, with their name emblazoned on it. Christmas shopping should never be a chore. But when you’re surrounded by cheery festive overload it sort of pushes you to the other side of happiness. Oh and when you forget it’s Black Friday too...   Go just about anywhere and you’ll hear Shakin Stevens on loop, see shop assistants in titled santa hats and mechanical elves trapped in fake snow storms to remind you that ‘tis the season to be jolly’. Of course there are the crowds to contend with too. Like being swept up in the rapids it took all the strength I could muster to make my way to the shop entrance and cling on for dear life. ..

It’s time. We must down tools and get those Christmas thinking caps on.   Outfits, food, decorations and most importantly - presents!   The biggest gifts are usually the easiest ones to sort out. The ones we know will be greeted with howls of delight and eternal thanks (for about two weeks at least...). We can get these boxed off, boxed up and ready to go under the tree.   It’s the little ones that get us all in a tizzy. The month of July has now begun and the summer holidays are almost within reach! With this in mind, also looming is the age old dilemma of what to buy for the teacher…   Before I became a school mum, in those heady days when I was young, free, childless and single, I recall having the same discussion with my sister when her daughter was in reception.   It was Christmas time and she was ‘umming’ and ‘ahhing’ over a candle or a bottle of fizz.
