So the new school term is well under way. With any luck, your children will be sleeping soundly and waking up happy, refreshed and ready to face each day.
But if not, hang on in there, it WILL get better!
In the meantime take a look at our helpful hints below. Experts say that increasing your child’s sleep by as little as half an hour each day can result in dramatic improvements in their schoolwork, attitude and general well being so it really is worth making the effort to get it right - not least if it means less back chat in the mornings!
Here goes…
-
Stop screen time at least an hour before bedtime.
-
Choose low lighting in children’s bedrooms when bedtime is approaching.
-
Try to avoid letting your children eat or do exercise for at least an hour before bedtime.
-
Don’t allow caffeine for a good few hours before bedtime.
-
Stick to quiet, calm activities when bedtime is approaching and sleep will come much easier.
-
Allow reading in bed to replace tablets, phones or other computer screens if necessary.
-
Don’t use sleep as a punishment, make it something to look forward to instead. Reading stories or having a little chat about your day can be a lovely way to end the day for both parent and child.
-
Join in the bedtime routine if you can. Sounds a little impractical for those of you just coming in from work as your child is climbing the stairs. However, simply brushing your teeth alongside your child could be the missing piece in their bedtime puzzle. Not only will they look forward to this little ritual but it means you get to spend a valuable few minutes together at the end of each day.
It’s also quite handy if there is a lovely, comfortable child’s bed awaiting….And if you haven’t got one already we can certainly help you with that.
