It’s half term. That delightful time when you start to realise with a jolt that summer is just around the corner (in theory). If it hasn’t crossed your mind already, then you’re obviously too busy thinking up ‘fun’ activities to do with the children this week...Get those playhouses and pavilions dusted off!
The arrival of summer is great news for the most part. No more school runs, warmer weather (perhaps) and the prospect of a holiday in the sun! That’s all very nice but it also means I have to start thinking about my ‘bikini body’ - as everyone keeps reminding me...
You can’t move on the internet these days for oiled-up, selfie obsessed reality stars in designer swimwear, showing off their recent weight loss. The pressure is heaped on us mere mortals to conform!
So if it’s not them or a tv advert, it’s the side of a cereal packet telling me that I need to get into shape, lose weight and eat, well basically, seeds.
Admittedly they are all right to a degree. Maybe I could do with losing a few pounds, toning my tum and...no, I draw the line at seeds. But the idea that I have to look ‘runway ready’ is not only uneccessary, it's virtually impossible too. Sigh. I've got more chance of being wooed by George Clooney, which considering he's married, narrows my ever-so-slim chances even further. Never mind, I don’t need Andre’s abs to feel good about myself - despite the fact they would probably help a bit...
So 'they' can keep their selfies, belfies and felfies and stick them in the family album to be marvelled at in years to come, when this current trend will be regarded no doubt as completely and utterly daft.
I’m no supermodel, but I know that having a big smile and even just a smidgen of confidence more than makes up for a spare tyre (or two!). And if I'm not quite feeling it, I could always just hide in the playhouse of course...
Whatever shape I may be come summer, I shall be donning my swimsuit with pride and showing my children that imperfections certainly DO make the woman - and there won't be a selfie in sight!
