The summer holidays are drawing to a close and it’s almost time to ‘get back into the old routine’...
It’s with mixed feelings that I approach this time of year. I’m sad that our family holiday is over and sad for the children that they will soon be under the pressures of school life once more.
But I will not be sad to have my house ship shape and organised just the way I like it!
And in truth, I won’t be sad to slip ‘back into the old routine’ either, despite it being a phrase often uttered with rolling eyes and a defeated shrug of the shoulders.
In fact, ‘the old routine’ is highly underrated in my book especially when it comes to your child’s sleeping patterns.
Towards the end of the summer holidays sensible sleeping habits go out of the window due to late nights, lazy mornings, holidays and sleepovers. If you are back at school and your child is still struggling to fall asleep at night, perhaps there are a few things you could look at.
Is your child’s diet conducive to a good night’s sleep?
It could be the case that your child’s diet is healthy, but happens to contain certain stimulants like caffeine, tyramine, fat and sugar. Perhaps trying to introduce more foods that contain substances such as melatonin, magnesium or lycopene which are all sleep-inducing, could help.
Does your child get enough exercise?
The experts tell us that every one hour without exercise means three minutes longer for your child to fall asleep at night.
It’s long been proven that exercise has multiple benefits, not least better sleep. Make that trip to the park a necessity rather than a luxury!
Is your child’s bedroom a comfortable place to fall asleep?
Children’s bedrooms and children’s furniture can play a huge part in your child’s quality of sleep. A spacious children’s bed with a firm yet comfortable mattress can make all the difference.
It is also important to make sure your child’s bedroom is suitably cool and dark, ready for a restful night’s sleep.
Do you adhere to a bedtime routine?
We all know that children thrive on routine and their bedtime rituals are at the top of the list.
It could be as simple as a bath, a story, then bed. If you stick to it, your child will begin to prompt you when it’s time to climb those stairs…
