As the dreaded changing of the clock approaches, we thought we would help you suitably prepare so the whole family can enjoy a well-deserved extra hour in bed!
It’s amazing how one solitary hour can make such a huge difference to your child’s sleep pattern, but if you act now, the clocks will go back on October 29th without anyone batting an eyelid!
Here’s how:

Move bedtime gradually - It’s taken you a long time to get your child’s body clock running like a well-oiled machine, but it’s time for a tweak if you want that lie in! Two weeks before the clocks go back, delay bedtime by 15 minutes. After a few nights, move it a further 15 minutes and so on until bedtime is a whole hour later. Bingo!

Encourage exercise - Get your children out and about to snatch an hour or so of play during the last of those lovely light evenings. Make sure they are energised and able to stay up that little bit longer.

Then...wind down - To help them get a good night’s sleep, a little calm and relaxation at least half an hour before bed is ideal. Turn those screens off and that low lighting on.

Keep to your familiar bedtime routine - The time your child goes to bed should be the ONLY thing you change in the run up to the clocks going back. Keeping bath time, teeth time and story time the same, your child will experience enough familiarity to enable their body clock to adjust without too many problems.

Wakey wakey! - Children don’t really have a clue when it’s time to rise and shine so it's good to give them a few pointers. A timed bedside light, set to come on each morning and adjusted along with bedtime, is a great idea. For older children, showing them where the clock’s hands should be before they venture out of bed will not only help them realise when it’s appropriate to get up, it will also build their confidence in telling the time.

Delay breakfast - Just like bedtime and wake up time, breakfast and bottles should be delayed too. Don’t be tempted to feed your child if they do happen to wake early. Stick to your guns or that body clock will never adjust. All the tears will be worth it when you’re snoozing away for that extra hour…!
