So December is here and the madness has just gone up a notch. You’ve got presents to buy for everyone and his dog - then wrap them - a Christmas dinner for 14 to organise and somewhere amongst that lot you must shoehorn in your yearly visits to loved ones, or make space in your home for them to visit you. Phew. The mere thought of it all exhausts me!
Well don’t fret because we’ve got some handy tips to keep your children chirpy and cheerful despite all the upheaval the festive season can bring. Missed naps, irregular mealtimes, late bedtimes...it all adds up to a grumpy, grouchy child which never makes for a happy home - or a happy parent!
Here's how to avoid the pitfalls:

Keep regular bedtimes and mealtimes in the run up to Christmas to ensure your children start their holidays in the right frame of mind. The more rest they get, the more likely they will be able to adapt to any temporary change in routine.

If you are going away for a short break over the holidays try to keep bedtimes as close to normal as possible to prevent those terrible tired-induced tantrums!

Take items from home such as blankets, pillows and bedside lights.

Get your child used to the room they will sleep in before bedtime. Let them play there during the day for a short while if possible.

Try not to let your child have too many late nights in a row over the holiday season. You might have to miss a little festive fun but won’t regret it when your child is sleeping soundly instead of struggling for weeks to get back into their routine.

When the holidays are coming to an end, try and organise a few extra early bedtimes to make sure your little ones are refreshed, well rested and ready for the start of term!
