Decorating the nursery is a very exciting time for new mums.
Creating a comfortable and safe space for baby is always top priority - but delightful décor comes a very close second!
For most mums this means getting completely carried away with every teddy bear, bell and whistle imaginable.
As lovely as that is, it also helps to leave space in those plans to consider the world of toddlerhood too, so there won’t be a vast amount to change when the time comes.
The early months of motherhood are often a blur of feeding, soothing and snatched hours of sleep. But before you know it, you’ll have a small child in tow who needs space to accommodate their growing body and mind…So how can you transform their nursery into a beautiful child’s bedroom?
If you haven’t started to decorate your nursery just yet, it’s well worth considering a cotbed.
You will pay more than for a standard cot, but it’ll be an investment that will see your child through the first three years of their life at least…
Decent, hard wearing cot beds are hard to come by. Make sure you check that your chosen product conforms with BS safety standards and that it’s strong and sturdy enough to withstand a growing child’s bouncy, excitable behaviour.
Opt for children’s furniture that will be useful for babies and young children alike.
This can be as simple as a chest of drawers with a removable changing table on top, or a wardrobe with adjustable railings to accommodate those bigger clothes and that growing collection of shoes! Check out Little Lucy Willow’s Nursery Collection for stunning matching furniture that is designed to go the distance.
We’ve put together a few more ideas to help you create the perfect child’s bedroom:
- The ‘big bed’ - If you don’t have a cotbed and need a new bed for your child, look for one that will last. Little Lucy Willow beds are sturdy, strong and have two height settings. A lower setting for toddlers and a higher setting for the time when your child has grown and is ready. At this stage, a truckle or storage drawer can be added beneath, providing a bed that will last until those teenage years and beyond.
- The colour - you may have splashed the walls with colour for your baby boy or girl, but when they start to grow up it might be wise to strip things back and play it safe with a neutral palette. This way, your child can express themselves with their own favourite colours and tastes using accessories and trimmings as they change and grow.
- The bedding - as your child gets a little older and you convert the cotbed into a ‘big bed’, you will probably need new bedding too. There are so many gorgeous options available it’s hard to know where to start. Find out what colours and patterns your child is drawn to and take it from there. With neutral walls and unfussy furniture, striking fabrics on quilts, bedspreads and cushions might be all you need for a compete transformation.
- The storage – As children grow they’re likely to need lots more storage. Christmas, birthdays, an afternoon at grandmas…those toys, books and clothes certainly have a habit of piling up. Trying to discard old belongings might sound like the sensible option but it can be much harder than you think. A bedding box is always a good storage solution. Not only do they look stylish, they will also provide some much-needed seating for those all-important games of school!
- The décor – simply changing accessories or adding new ones can completely transform a child’s room. Removing those musical mobiles and teddy bear stencils is a good start. Think about using statement pieces such as light up wall art, brightly coloured bunting, fairy lights or a feature mirror. Adding family photographs in striking frames is a cute personal touch as well as being a comfort to children who may find it difficult to sleep at night.
