Here at Little Lucy Willow we appreciate anything timeless, durable, luxurious and British – much like our furniture of course…These qualities are central to many brands and products, not least the Burberry trench coat which sprung to mind this week as we talked fashion over coffee (and chocolate caramel cake).
Now there aren’t many items of clothing that can claim longevity like this one can. That’s why we’re such fans. Much like our furniture, it’s a lifetime investment. Ok I’ll stop talking furniture now and start talking history…
When Thomas Burberry designed this coat in 1879 using his revolutionary waterproof gabardine fabric, it was as a practical military garment. The triple-proofed cloth repelled water like no other and was even worn by the first explorers to the poles. The practicalities of the coat included a gun flap at the chest and a storm shield on the upper back, both providing extra protection from the elements. Metal D-rings on the belt, which are still part of the design today, were once used to carry military equipment.
As the company’s signature piece, the trench coat was once an essential item for military officers. However, these days it’s more likely to be seen on any self-respecting civilian after sealing its post-war status as a fashion icon. Movies such as Dick Tracy and Casablanca saw to that.
It’s said that more than 100 individual processes must be completed to make the Burberry trench coat. Who wouldn’t want to be wrapped in such craftsmanship? I know I certainly would.
