Messy Kids Bedrooms: 8 Smart Storage Tips

Maybe you never thought you’d literally become one of those parents who have to say, “tidy your room!” five times a day. Yes, children are naturally energetic and spontaneous, and that often means they can blow through a room like mini hurricanes, leaving a wake of toys and clothes behind them.

Occasional untidiness is par for the course, but at the same time, a little careful planning and smart design hacks can help any parent keep their sanity. Here are 10 easy ways to help ensure your child’s bedroom is clean and tidy:

Smart Tips For Messy Bedrooms:

In this room, stuffed toys and knick-knacks can easily be concealed in under-bed storage or cabin bed. Clothes on the floor can be hung out of sight on decorative hooks behind the door, or thrown in a hamper. Clutter on the dresser and chest of drawers can easily be stored inside the drawers in special compartments, while a trinket tray or vanity caddy could neatly store other bits and pieces.

Messy bedroom number 2: This room is crying out for a dedicated dressing area and vanity, perhaps with pretty baskets to store handbags, accessories and hair tools. A floating shelf above the headboard could bring some much-needed space and a special workstation could be set up to neatly file away papers and documents.

Take advantage of under bed storage

When it comes to quickly stowing away toys, the under-bed area is prime real estate. Invest in low, flat storage boxes for seasonal clothing, smaller toys or blankets and bedding that might otherwise end up strewn across the floor. Also consider bespoke truckle or cabin children’s beds with built-in drawers. You’ll have a place to stash the mess – and a good argument for why there aren’t any monsters hiding there!

Containers are your friend

A messy room is often simply a disorganised one. Use baskets, buckets or storage containers to sort the chaos. Position them in areas of the room to demarcate different zones. It may be helpful to put a laundry hamper behind a door, or use a few coloured plastic or soft tubs to hold toys and coordinate with the room’s theme.

Use smart furniture

Every piece of furniture in your child’s room can potentially double up as covert storage. Bedside tables and ottomans or bedding boxes for the base of the bed look lovely and conceal a multitude of sins. Choose a coordinating colour and go for pieces that have plenty of drawers.

Use hooks on doors and cupboards

It doesn’t take much effort to quickly hang something up on the back of a door, yet it instantly makes a room look cleaner. Install fun hooks, knobs or hanging organisers on the back of the bedroom door or put some inside a cupboard door to tuck away bags, toys, coats, a hairbrush, jewelry, scarves and more. If your child is prone to throwing clothes everywhere, a clothes horse tucked into a corner might work.

Create separate “stations” throughout the room

When designing and decorating your child’s room, it’s useful to think in terms of zones, and the activities they’re likely to do in each area of the room. For instance, if you have an avid crafter, you could set up a little art desk with a cork board, decorative hooks and wall-mounted baskets for supplies to keep things tidy when they get working on a painting or Play-Doh creation. Similarly, use magazine racks or bookcases to mark out a reading corner, or a little vanity with fold-away mirror for dressing in the mornings.

Organise your drawers

Drawer organisers make it easy to have “a place for everything and everything in its place.” These can come in any shape or size to help you arrange underwear, socks and folded clothing, accessories, art supplies or smaller toys.

It’s a fact universally acknowledged that kids (and adults!) can be messy sometimes, and if they’re creating a little chaos, it simply means they’re learning and having fun. Make things a little easier on everyone, however, by making sure there’s ample storage where it’s needed so that both you and your child can tidy up easily and often, before things get out of hand! With some forethought and imagination, most storage solutions can harmonise with any décor, and give your child the chance to express their creativity and individuality.
