Full on fisticuffs, comedy tugs of war and a bit of wrestling thrown in for good measure? No, this wasn’t the “It’s A Knockout” Christmas special. This was Black Friday. Another nonsense idea stolen from America which turned out only to expose the greedy stop-at-nothing ones amongst us.
There are few things more annoying than buying an important purchase only to discover days later that the price has been slashed by 50%. Grrrr. This, in part, is why we didn’t participate in Black Friday. This crazy event is so called as the day retailers start turning a profit, crossing from the red into the black. However, after watching the news that night, I think it’s name reflects a far more sinister meaning!
Don’t get me wrong, we all love a bargain but is it worth getting a black eye for? I’m sure I’m not alone when I say I cringed watching those clips on the news. I read last night that many of those lovely polite shoppers (ahem) who battled over the huge sub-standard televisions in supermarkets across the land are now struggling to sell them on ebay. Now if they were just buying them to make a fast buck out of someone else – and failing it really wasn’t worth that shiner was it?
What you’ve got to consider in the sales is how many large retailers fiddle with prices. The old trick of pushing up the numbers for a few weeks then announcing there’s 50% off, never fails to lure the customer into thinking they’ve got a bargain. It’s all mind games if you ask me.
